August brings the peak of the harvest year for most fruiting crops, from Tomatoes and Peppers to Eggplant and Melons. I really enjoy introducing these favorite items to the markets, and for our coworkers, it's the final proof that all of their hard work was really worth it! As a four season grower, I know this excitement is short lived, because the deadlines for starting and transplanting our Winter Harvests, our overwintered crops, and even our "Season Extended" crops, is now the task at hand. I will talk about the coming "Persephone Period", when plant growth almost stops, soon enough.
As we all enjoy the season's bounty, our friends and coworkers actually believe me when it's time to prepare new Carrot beds, trade in the Cucumber beds for new Curly Kale, it's almost time to transplant the Spinach, and the new Baby Lettuce will no longer be too bitter to grow! I also just taste tested the coming Apple Crop, and some great varieties are almost ready!
