Farm Happenings for June 17, 2021

Posted on June 14th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 4! After a dry and hot spring, we welcomed the atmospheric river yesterday and enjoyed the sound of 2 inches (!) of rain falling while trellising tomatoes. While we irrigate plants when needed, rain really is the best irrigation because it is nitrated (small amounts of dissolved atmospheric nitrogen that is bioavailable) and the plants were ready for it!

We started seeding fall/winter crops in earnest last week; it always amazes me that we are planting these crops before we even get to eat a single tomato, but that’s how it works!

MORE EGG SHARES ARE AVAILABLE! We have secured more eggs for you and now is the time to add an egg share if you want eggs automatically with your veg share. We will continue to have eggs a la cart as well. If you need assistance, please email HARVIE support at support@harvie.farm.

Crew Introductions:

We are lucky to have a great crew this year and would like to introduce you to the hands behind your veggies.

Farming for 3 seasons here in WA

Why farming?I first got interested in farming because I want to grow food for my community and work outside with my body. Farming fascinates me! I love learning something new every day and developing the scientific problem-solving approach necessary for being a good farmer.

Favorite veggie:Picking a favorite vegetable is so hard! It is like picking a favorite child.. I would say though I'm very fond of garlic.

Future aspirations:In the future, I would like to be part of creating a collective farm for queer people in recovery. Creating a connection with food, self, community, and the land is healing and I would love to bring that to more people who are struggling.

Some crops this week:

Lots of garlic forms this week! This is the best garlic patch we have ever had on this farm. Garlic scapes in particular are only here for a short time, so please indulge if you wish! This is probably one of the last weeks for green garlic and we will have plenty of fresh garlic bulbs soon. Fresh bulbs should be stored in the fridge as they have not been cured.

Sprouting Cauliflower:This is the cauliflower equivalent of broccolini! Tender stems and beautiful florets that are great roasted or grilled (more surface area for crunchy bits.)

Basil:First substantial basil harvest coming in this week! We have been pinching tops for the past few weeks to prep the plants and we are excited to have lots of aromatic basil for you this summer.

Garlic Party:

For those on the bi-weekly plan and didn't hear about this last week, garlic harvest is coming up and we are excited to have our annual CSA garlic party! Come help us harvest and prep our garlic crop, visit the sheep, and jump in the river. More details to come, once the garlic indicates when it is close to harvest, usually sometime late June or early July.
