Posted on June 20th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Happy Summer Solstice! Both the days and to do list are lengthy this time of year. Summer is definitely back we are busy in the planting, weeding, harvesting cycle. The first fall crops went in the ground last week and we have started mowing down early spring crops that we have been harvesting from.

Reminders:
We have secured more eggs for you and have made more egg shares available! If you need assistance with this, please email harvie support at support@harvie.farm.

No bread for this week as our baker is on vacation. Back next week!

Flower Shares start NEXT WEEK.

Anneke is next in our crew introduction series! In her own words:

Name: Anneke Fleming / she/her
Hometown: Marshall MI & Orcas Island WA

2nd season farming!

Why farming?
I love plant biology, being outside, and also eating, and farming combines all of those things. Later in my life I hope to work in health equity, and farming also helps me learn about how food access and food sovereignty interplay with human health.

Fav Veg:
Green beans. I was a green bean for my first Halloween.

Future aspirations:
To work at the intersection of science and social justice in the field of environmental public health. My interests include toxicology, epidemiology, citizen science, and rural medicine - in the next few years I hope to explore them in the workforce before going to grad school.

New veggies:

Cucumbers! We have been eating cukes for a couple of weeks and have enough to share now!

Beans! First planting of beans were seriously mowed down by rabbits, but have sort of recovered enough for a small harvest. Beans are multi color and are perfect blanched and chilled for salad or quickly sautéed for an easy side dish.

Green Coriander: This is immature coriander seed. Great in pickling liquid or for making fresh curry paste. See this article from Samin Nosrat for more.

Celtuce- Chinese stem lettuce. get it this week before the heat wave! Think lettuce+water chestnut; great stir fried! Use it like asparagus. More info on this crop here

Last call for green garlic and green shallots this week! But the season's first green onions are in! We will have fresh sweet onions very soon as well!
