Week 14 -- Cool but sunny

Posted on September 15th, 2020
The silver maple by our house is tinged with red. And this last week of summer is sunny, but cool. There was a slight touch of frost in some of the winter squash on Monday night, but otherwise I think we came away unscathed. We did cover the peppers last night, some with two layers of row cover, be1 read more »

Week 13 -- Cool and wet!

Posted on September 8th, 2020
It's a cool and wet start to the week. This isn't ideal weather for ripening the last of the tomatoes. They do enjoy warmer temperatures and more sunshine. Fortunately, there are other crops in the garden at this time of the year that actually enjoy this weather, like many of the leafy greens and f1 read more »

Week 12 -- September!

Posted on September 1st, 2020
We did a whirlwind through the garden on Monday and Tuesday -- uncovering fall crops, weeding, removing the cucumbers, and doing the last bit of seeding! From here on, the shortening days are the limiting factor in growing vegetables. So, we seeded spinach, radish, mixed greens, arugula rapini, kal1 read more »

Week 11 -- Halfway and done planting, almost

Posted on August 25th, 2020
We are now in the second half of the delivery season! And we are pretty well done planting -- the last round of argula, mustard and mizuna, turnips and bok choi was planted this morning. Okay, we do have well over 100 rhubarb plants and about 1000 asparagus plants that still need to be planted this1 read more »

Week 10 -- A LOT of rain

Posted on August 17th, 2020
We decided not to plant on Friday -- the forecast was calling for hot and dry both that day and the next. Plus there was rain forecast for Sunday. I figured 2 days out in the scorching sun would decimate our beautiful little plants. Better to wait (be patient!) and plant later. And wow -- that was1 read more »

Week 9 -- Tomatoes

Posted on August 10th, 2020
The tomato season is in full swing. We grow a more than 10 varieties of tomatoes: small cherry and grapes, various salad varieties (cut them into quarters and you have a salad), slicers (for your summer one-slice tomato sandwiches), and romas/paste tomatoes (for tomato sauce). We choose varieties f1 read more »

Week 8 -- August 4th

Posted on August 3rd, 2020
Rain, rain, wonderful rain. Did we ever get a soaker of a rain on Sunday! The pond level is up substantially and I think everything in the garden grew overnight. It is looking lush out there. The wildflowers are blooming around the pond! The pond was dug last autumn -- for habitat/biodiversity, tem1 read more »

Week 7 -- What happened to July?

Posted on July 28th, 2020
What a relief this morning! Cooler temperatures after a wonderful rain, late yesterday afternoon. What a difference the two together make!  What seemed impossible yesterday, can be done today. Here we are in week 7 of the CSA season. July has flown past -- a blur of harvesting, planting, water1 read more »

Week 6 -- July 21

Posted on July 21st, 2020
Ask any market gardener and they will tell you -- July is INTENSE! We are harvesting lots (yipppee!!), taking care of crops through pruning, trellising and yes, some weeding. And, 'tis the season for planting for autumn crops. Meanwhile, the days are hot, long and dry. Fortunately, we have been ble1 read more »
