First Days of Fall

Posted on September 26th, 2019 by Phoebe Autry

Fall is here. The mornings lately have had a crisp chill to them. The colors surrounding the farm resemble hues of yellow, orange and brown. The end of irrigation season looms on the horizon, only two and a half more weeks.

With the beginning of fall comes the rush to get all the fields, animals and everything else ready. Out in the garden we race against the supposed frost coming this weekend to get fields cleaned out and cover crop seed in. So much of the work we do this season is about making our soil better and our lives a little easier next season. The cows are noticeably a bit fluffier as they anticipate the colder temperatures; and we brainstorm the best ways to water animals when hoses freeze. September means an acceptance that we won't feel rested until winter, but our season hasn't quite reached an end.

As our summer CSA wraps up, we reflect on how lucky we are to bring you delicious vegetables, eggs, beef and ferments all summer long. And we want to continue to bring you grass-fed beef and pasture eggs, as well as Sun Sauce and Sun Tonic all winter long. Make sure to signup for our winter CSA (https://www.harvie.farm/signup/spoon-full-farm).

We hope you enjoy the beauty and quietness of fall, as we are beginning to out here.

With love,
