Last week we hilled and mulched the potatoes - all 3600 feet of them - and I snapped this photo at the beginning of the week. I like to take pictures of the rows periodically to track their growth. It is hard to tell that the plants are growing sometimes when you look at them each day. Tomatoes went in this week, and they also got a thick cover of straw mulch. We planted large red slicing tomatoes, several varieties of heirlooms, cherries, and paste tomatoes. We can't wait for these babies to take off and start producing delicious fruit!
Beans were seeded too and we're grateful that we have irrigation to water them in, as it's pretty dry out there. Green beans and yellow wax beans should show up in shares in late June/ early July.
Last week we introduced you to Madison, and we have a few other women working with us this year who you'll hear about soon. Ellie Mae, who has been working at MRF since last fall, is with us full time starting this week! She takes care of Theo, our one year old, during the day. She also helps with various farm tasks, including seeding in the greenhouse, washing eggs, and covering plants with row cover.
You'll see a few different items on the share list this week as we are in a bit of a "spring slump" between the spring and summer crops...One of these items is our pastured/organically-fed eggs. You'll see them as an option to swap into your share this week.
