Cabbage and broccoli are coming in this week, along with a second variety of broccolini that has more floret and less stem than what you've seen in shares recently. For broccolini, we grow two varieties, one is 'Melody' (the stemmy one) and 'BC611' (the floret-y? one). It is often advantageous to grow a couple different varieties of each crop so that they are ready to harvest at different times. 'Melody' is very early, while 'BC611' takes awhile to form heads, so it will come in a bit later. Then once they are both in, we'll have lots of broccolini, as they will continue to send up new shoots as we harvest.
Similarly with cabbage, with grow several varieties to have a staggered harvest. We found last year and this spring that 'Tendersweet' and 'Caraflex' do really well here. So we planted those two for the fall, along with 'Capture' (a late variety), which we are giving another chance to perform, as it didn't do well in the spring. If you swap cabbage into your share this week, when you open your box you'll find a very distinctive looking cabbage. 'Tendersweet' has a flattened head, and it packs into boxes beautifully. 'Caraflex' is a pointy cabbage, which also packs really well. You will love the sweet taste of either cabbage!
If you're a cabbage fan, what do you like to do with it? Are you Team Raw (slaw, anyone?) or Team Cooked (stir fry time)? Either way you slice it, it's delicious!
We hope you enjoy, & have a wonderful week!
