Farm Happenings for August 24, 2020

Posted on August 20th, 2020 by Tim Vrieselaar

The heat starting to get things growing.  This week they are again able to pick a few peas and beans.  It is not nearly as much as we had before the storm but it's a start.

We harvested our cover crop this week.  It was rye and ended up very tall!!  It was over Farmer Tim's head!  The hail did some of the threshing on it...but not too bad.  What started out as 5 acres...yielded enough seed to cover the whole quarter-280 acres!  That's pretty impressive.  It is safe in the grain bin and will be used and sold for seed next spring.  The straw is getting baled and will keep our chickens warm this winter.

The onion crop is one of our worst this year.  The onions are small..there's alot of bug damage and with the tops blasted off they are not really growing anymore.  We will pull them out and send what is good. And come fall we will likely be buying in onions to supply you.  It seems to be a cover crop trade off... the cover crop helps to get the weeds under control...but it also gives the bugs a place to survive and thrive:(  Sometimes you just can't win everything...

In good news...the corn is almost ready for harvest...we hope to have it in the baskets next week.  It's pretty exciting to be able to harvest the corn and we know it will be delicious!!!  The beets are getting harvested this week ...that will be a change in your baskets as well.  We know that beets are a love /hate vegetable (ha ha)...but if you have them on your likes list...they should be coming in your basket.... (personally I can't wait to fry up some fresh beets again....cause I think they are delicious!)

It's been a scorcher of a week!!! We have made time for a swim most every day...it encourages the kids to get their jobs done each day and it just feels so good to cool off and relax.  Speaking of relax...we are headed out for a family day at Waterton tomorrow....it's been a busy summer with not much time together so we are really looking forward to the time together.  We used to have a yearly Waterton trip...but recent years it hasn't happened ...the kids get older..the schedule gets busier and getting everyone day off at the same time takes a bit of planning....

Hope you are all surviving the heat...last year we had frost by this time...so there's no complaining about the growing weather on our end....enjoy the heat while it lasts!
