What a wild day!! We were all set to put the new plastic on the greenhouse...then the forecast said wind...so we had half the help crew here already at 6:30 and we called it off. But by that time it's too late to go sneak back into bed for an extra hour. So it was fresh muffins for breakfast.
But by 9 the wind had still not really started....so we began rethinking out move. By noon there was still hardly any wind...and I got antsy!! I confess. It's all my fault:(
So ...we quickly called a crew together and decided to give it a go. It was going not too bad. But when you have a 200 x 50 foot sheet of plastic....you can just imagine what kind of a kite it can turn into with the wind.
And sure enough...we almost had the roll unrolled across the 200 foot length...and the wind started. Not a strong wind...just a few gusts of maybe max 40km. But they can cause havoc in seconds!
We knew instantly that it was not going to work. But we only had seconds to make a decision....and I know we made the right decision. Everyone on the east side of the greenhouse...let go of the plastic and run around to the west side...pull the plastic down into a bundle and hang on tight! It worked....and our efforts were over....and thankfully our plastic was saved.
Lesson of the day...next time I just be a bit more patient and wait for my wise Hubby to make the safe weather call;)...there's a reason I am married to a SMART FARMER!!
We tied the plastic to the poles, added tires to make sure it stays put....and called it a day. What a wild and crazy day!! The forecast is for wind and cold for a few days...hoping we get a chance to try again next week. We are itching to get it covered....and start seeding.
We are not late on seeding yet...but I really want to get you folks some fresh spinach!!
