It's August already and the fun continues. There is always something ready to harvest at this time of the year. The beans are doing great and if anyone wants bulk beans for preserving...now is the time to speak up and ask for some. The first cherry tomatoes have been picked...those girls are in the greenhouse this year....so we will have those for a long time to come!
The broccoli is just about ready...and boy is it big!! Many heads are the size of dinner plates! They are very late compared to some other years...but we are amazed that they have handled the heat and are still growing. I think this year will see record size broccolis coming off the plants. Broccoli is one crop that I wish we could preserve better. Canning is a no-go..and freezing broccoli is still not nearly as good as it's fresh version. So I guess that means we need to eat as much of it as fresh as we can...and then survive the winter without it.
The corn is also just around the corner. We are hoping that it will be ready by next week for this order. The heat makes things a bit different for crop readiness judging...but hopefully it will finish filling out and be ready to go by next week.
The potatoes are sizing up really good. Soon we will be mowing the tops off so that they skin over for the winter. Until then we do not like to wash them because it greatly decreases their shelf life. So that is one crop you get to enjoy fresh from the garden!
We are eagerly awaiting some company this week...some short term and some long term...The short term company is Grandma!! We haven't seen her in over a year and so we are all very excited to spend some time together. The long term company is going to be puppies! Our golden retriever is getting fatter by the day and the kids are really looking forward to some new fur babies again.
School starting is just around the corner...I can't believer how fast the summer is going...I am certainly not nearly ready to be thinking about school starting!
Hopefully you are all enjoying the summer season and all it's bounty. We are thankful for you support and enjoy bringing you the harvest each week! Wishing you all a wondeful week!
