Farm Happenings for November 26, 2018

Posted on November 23rd, 2018 by Tim Vrieselaar

It's been awhile since you have heard from us.  Sorry.  Things have still been busy here.  Whoever said winters weren't busy on the farm....never lived on the farm.  There is always something that is calling for our attention.

We've been finishing up field cleanup and working up as much of the field as we can so that is can collect snow all winter for spring moisture.   The pivot is almost ready to go - -just a bit more wiring and then it should be ready for a test run around the field.  (for now...it's making many beautiful morning silhouettes against the ever beautiful Alberta sunrises!)

"Lettuce" not leave you in the dark.... I'm sure you have heard about the safety recall of romaine lettuce.  We just want you to know that we are one step closer to growing our own delicious lettuce for the fall share.  What was seeded and never got planted outside because it was too late...did wonderful in the greenhouse.  It rooted though into the ground and was able to stay alive in some pretty cold temperatures.  We are certain that if we build little hoops over top next fall....we can keep fresh lettuce on the menu for most of the fall season.  The only reason it is frozen now is because a fierce wind blew the door off the greenhouse and then it had not protection anymore:(

(We have not been totally happy with the greens we are getting from Fresh Flavor)  The plants are not what we had hoped and so for now we are determined to supply you with our own field lettuce  (instead of aquaponic).  The plants are simply struggling for enough light at this time of the year and that produces leggy lettuce.  We appreciate your patience with this lettuce supplier for the rest of the season - but I do think things will be better next winter.

The busy birthday season is behind me again (Ivan, Nathan, Tim and Sarah) all in a few weeks meant lots of extra busyness in our house.  And now...other than a major cold that has again kept me from my delivery duties....I am looking forward to making the trek to Calgary again to take my turn at a delivery.  Thanks to Tim for putting on all the miles . . . and letting me take a nap while he wished he could be too!!
