Farm Happenings at Noble Gardens
Back to Farm Happenings at Noble Gardens

20 years. a wife..and 9 kiddos later

Posted on September 1st, 2018 by Tim Vrieselaar

It was a little over 20 years ago that Farmer Tim bought the land we now call home.  That summer he got right down to business and laid the mainline that would supply water for irrigation for many, many hours of pipe moving over the years. His dad was there to help at that time...farm history

It was a huge job laying it out and getting it running but together they got the job done...and water flowing!

history

He was just a young, single guy then;) A few years later we were married and when Aaron was just a year old we moved onto the farm.  Since then our family has grown and our farm has changed (from a silage crop, to sheep farm. to strawberry farm, to vegetables).  It has not been an easy journey....don't ever think that farming is easy!!

But this week...history replayed itself but with a different generation!  Farmer Tim pulled that same mainline out (with the help of Andrew and Nathan) to make way to the new pivot!!

This was a dream for many years (Pivots are pricey !!! :)  But finally we got to see the new pivot show up on the trailer this week...a full quarter mile pivot fit easily on 1 semi!

This is a huge change that will benefit the farm in so many ways.  We will finally be able to get enough water to our plants when they need them.  We will be able to grow more green manure crops (again it's the water).  We will be able to spread the crops out for easier cultivation and weeding.  We will be able to rent out the rest of the farm to a committed organic farmer that will give the land the care it needs while we are busy with the garden acres ( and be able to rotate crops with him as he cultivates the green manure crops for us).

We are looking forward to watching the pivot go up....starting Monday!  And you can be sure we will let you know when the water flows again for the first time!!

Things are changing for the better...Next year....water whenever we need it!!

(But it does bring one small problem - the underground water line needs to go right through our garden ....so we will be harvesting as fast as we can to get it all cleaned out so they can finish in time to seed a fall compost crop.)  But since we've had a few frosts already - - we know the summer is over and it's time to bring in the rest of the harvest!

Then - 2017

That was then...Facing South in 1997.

Now 2018

This is now...Facing North in 2018.

SO...there's a good dose of Noble Gardens History to get you through the week - hope you enjoyed the trip down memory lane with us!
