Well folks, we’ve made it into July! This week we celebrate our first pick on green beans, which smell like proper summer food. We celebrate our garlic harvest, completed in full in only one day with many willing and tired backs, and our huge fall seeding in new ground--carrots and beets for winter planted across the creek (this week’s photo).
We also celebrate the opportunity to get away from the farm and recalibrate in order to return with fresh willingness and energy. While it can be an easy trap to fall into, boasting how many hours we’ve worked, how tired our backs, how dirty our hands, Emily has for years prioritized getting away as part of the job. It’s not a perk so much as a necessity so that we can make the push through July, which is the Wednesday of summer, if you will. At our Monday farm walk it came up as “the hump month” or “the distance sport of farming.” This week and next we are happy to send the whole Asmus family out on vacation!
We’ve got plenty of food our here at the farm for ya, though, and we sure are excited to share the new beans, the sized-up carrots and beets, most tender of potatoes, gently herbal raspberries, and gently anise-sweet fennel. Thank you so much for joining us in summer eating,
