Hello Everyone! Don't forget to hop on over to the Farmers Market tomorrow or on Farm on Friday, whichever your designated pick up location is, to grab your box for the week. As you may have heard, the Farmers Market at Libby will now be requiring masks to comply with the Governor's directive. We look forward to seeing you there, distantly, through shields, or imagining your smile under a mask, however the case may be!
We wanted to give a little bit more detail about how the Harvie system works for those that are curious. Basically, Harvie takes our harvest estimate and divides it out among your boxes...but HOW you ask?? Well, if you think you've been receiving special treatment because your last name starts with an 'A', you'd be wrong. The first thing that Harvie does in a given week is randomize all of the CSA members. Then starting at the top, Harvie runs down our estimate and assigns the first item that ranks a 5 to the first name, then goes down to the second name and does the same thing. Once all of the boxes have one item in them, Harvie starts back up at the top and assigns another item in the same way. It runs through this process many many times until all of the boxes are filled. So there are quite a few things that influence what show up in your box - your own preferences, the harvest estimate, the order that we enter things into the estimate, etc. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell...
Also wanted to share a few recipe tips with you this week. Did you know that you can use the stems to those cilantro bunches you've been getting along with or separate from the leaves? Thanks to fellow CSA member, Lere for sharing this recipe for Roasted Poblano Soup that goes into detail on why and when diced cilantro stems are actually more desirable than the leaves. Don't be surprised if you see this recipe again in a few weeks because we have a lot of poblano peppers on the way! For those beet fans out there, this recipe for a Roasted Beet Salad with Horseradish Creme Fraiche and Pistachios sound delicious and might even make a beet fan out of Bonnie (who typically isn't). Thanks CSA member Catherine for sharing!
Hope you can all beet the heat this weekend and stay as cool as a cucumber =)
Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy
