It’s beginning to look a lot like summer…every where we look… It’s definitely apparent when the nights stop freezing and the days reach into the 70s that plants start responding with new growth. The change is noticeable in your boxes this week as well as several new crops have come on line. We tend to start harvesting slowly however as we don’t yet have a handle on yield or regrowth for these new crops. So while some of you may see cilantro or broccoli in your boxes, it’s not enough for ALL of the boxes, so those that don’t might see scallions and napa cabbage instead, or iceberg lettuce. We’ve had another busy week of planting. All of our summer and winter squash are in the ground, as well as our first round of melons. We’re planting out two successions of melons this year in hopes of extending the melon season. Last year’s melons were sweet but short, and it seemed they were over almost as fast as they began, so here’s hoping for extended enjoyment of some sweet melons! It’s that time of the week again! Time to jump over to your Harvie profile and customize your share. A fun fact about our CSA system (Harvie). Many people do not tinker at all with their boxes and are quite happy with what they end up with. This is either because they are true veggie-holics or because they’ve set their preferences. By setting your preferences you rate the crops we grow on a scale of ‘love it’ to ‘hate it’ and the Harvie algorithm uses that info when filling boxes. So you should never end up with something you hate in your box, and as often as it’s able, Harvie will put something you love in your box over something that you’re mediocre about. While you’re at it, don’t forget the ‘other’ items that we have available to swap or add on to your box. This week, we’ve got:
- Farm Fresh eggs from the Miller Farm
- Bread and Bagels from The Gracious Table
- Honey from McLaury Apiaries
- Plant Starts from our own farm: Cherry Tomato 6-packs (a mix of Super Sweet 100, Sungold, and Black Cherry tomatoes), bell peppers, Super Sweet 100 tomatoes, and romaine lettuce 6-packs.
- Our fabulous new Hoot Owl Farm tee-shirts. If you choose to get a shirt, then you can let us know what color and size you'd like at your pick up. We have cream and green available in adult sizes S-3XL, and yellow available in kids S-L
Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie
PS. We really enjoyed having some beautiful crimson clover flowers (pic above) on the farm from our cover crop, but alas, they are over (over and over...). They've been mowed to incorporate into and feed the soil for our fall carrots. But we definitely have plans for more crimson clover in our future, what a beautiful cover crop!
