Your customization email is a bit late this week. One reason is that it was SOO hot yesterday, that we went straight to the river after work instead of straight to the internet! But another is so we could finish ironing out the details of a great extra that we have available this week: Flathead Cherries! After talking with Brittany from Flathead Fresh Orchard this week, we'll have some delicious (these are Certified Organic) cherries available to add to your boxes this week. The cherries will be in 2# bags and are Lapin cherries - 'The classic Flathead Cherry with a crunch'. Also this week, we have Dragon's Breath Farm bouquets back AND gladiolus bunches from our own farm as well. So there's really no reason to NOT have something sweet to snack on or something sweet to look at to pick up this week.
Farming has been challenging with the extremely hot temperatures. But we're doing our best to hydrate and take lots of breaks, but it is just much more exhausting to be out in the sun and heat. We're looking forward to cooler temps that are forecasted on Tuesday. The pic above is of Bonnie sewing a bridal veil...wait no, that's insect netting (which is actually quite similar to tulle). We are putting out a lot of insect netting for our fall plantings now and each and every edge has to be weighted down for it to be effective. We've been wanting to try sewing some pieces together to cut down on our edges and finally found the time to try it. Hopefully we'll now be able to cover an entire block with two pieces of netting instead of four, saving us a lot of sandbag and rock lifting and moving. Bonnie is not a seamstress, but it turns out that as long as the machine is working well, she can handle 100' of single straight line sewing with minimal cursing!
It's that time, so get into your Harvie profiles to customize your box! You'll see more cherry tomatoes and cucumbers, and a small amount of regular tomatoes. Still not enough to go around yet, but we're expecting a tomato explosion anytime now! If you don't get tomatoes in your share, consider coming early to market to possibly snag some. It's likely that we'll be able to pick them in excess of our harvest estimate because it's early in their ripening so we just don't know what to count on yet.
Stay cool this weekend!
Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie
