Deconstructing Dublin! Ok, that's an understandably confusing statement...we've called our new East field Ireland because it was first planted this year with mostly potatoes and onions. So when we needed a name to distinguish our tunnel over there from our other similar one, we naturally chose Dublin. The thing about Dublin though is that it was designed to be taken apart and moved once a year and that's what we're working on right now. Yes, it is a lot of work to deconstruct and then reconstruct a 16x104 foot tunnel every year, but it's worth it because we essentially get double use out of it. On Thursday, we harvested the last tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and peppers from that tunnel and then started removing those plants. On Friday, we moved the tunnel frame over the top of still growing lettuces. So those lettuces will continue to grow and be under cover once the truly cold weather hits, otherwise, we would have had to kick out those summer crops much earlier to make room for the lettuce. It also means that we can bounce around our tomato production to different parts of the farm each year which is a great feature because tomatoes are a very heavy feeding crop and we like being able to give them new soil to grow in!
The Dublin move is going well so far, the tunnel skeleton has been moved, and we'll continue with the finishing touches next week and hopefully have it 'skinned' in the next couple of weeks.
We hope you're not too confused by the location change for box pick up next week. Right now, we're just calling it 'Pop-Up in Libby' on Thursday 3-6. We WILL be somewhere right in the heart of Libby for you to pick up your box at next week, but we're not absolutely sure where yet (possibly the Venture parking lot). We plan to do a pop-up market and are just ironing out the details. So rest assured that there will be a convenient Libby pick up spot, and for those that choose on Farm pick up it'll still be Friday 2-5. We still have quite a bit of variety available because we're still miraculously frost-free. But it looks like next week that will likely change, so this might be the final week for some summer favorites (jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, tomatillos, and summer squash). Let us know if you have any questions! And just a reminder...if your order goes all the way, then you WILL get a confirmation email and a pick up reminder email. If you don't get that confirmation, then you likely didn't fully submit your order. Sorry about the confusion for our CSA members who are used to a more streamlined Harvie!
Have a wonderful weekend! Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie
