CSA Week #2 - Pick Up

Posted on May 26th, 2023 by Bonnie and Rudy Geber

Second succession of melons is planted (pic above)! We're really working hard to have both MORE melons this year and also have ripe melons for a longer stretch of time. They were very popular last year because you really can't compete with the flavor and texture of a fresh-picked and vine-ripened melon, and our CSA members and customers were really reminded of that when they tried our melons. So that means that we've seeded three separate successions of melons, the earliest one was timed to be planted out as early as possible (and not be killed by frost), and the latest one is intended to be about as late as we can plant and still expect to get ripe melons before the nighttime temps start to cool off. So, YES, it's ok to plant melons out now, and it's also not too late to be planting melons out now. Several of you grabbed a melon start with your produce this week, but anyone that didn't and still wants one, we will have melon starts at market.

Your boxes are set for this week, but we want to give a quick summary of what you CAN do to customize your boxes if you want to during the open window (that's your Friday email on a pick up week until Monday at noon).

- You can swap items out of your box and swap other items into your box. Swapping could result in a charge if you swap more expensive items for less expensive, but the system will tell let you know that.

- You can add items as extras. This means that you'll definitely result in a charge because you're keeping your default box and then adding additional items.

- You can 'hold' a delivery - i.e. you might hold a box if you know you can't pick it up, but aren't sure yet when you'd like to reschedule it. Or you can 'reschedule' a delivery.

- You can change your pick up spot for a given week from the market (Thursday 3-6:30) to the farm (Friday 2-5) or vice versa.

- Harvie is managed by 'centralized inventory'. That means that customization is happening in real time. If an item isn't available when you try to swap or add it, then it's because all of what we estimated we'd be able to harvest for the week ahead is already allocated in other boxes. But, if someone swaps out something (say broccoli), then it immediately becomes available again for someone else to scoop up. So if you really want to 'tinker' with your box, then you might want to check in once or twice during the customization window because availability may have changed.

Those are the basics, but if you have any questions, just let us know!

We look forward to seeing you all at pick up this week!

Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy

PS. Just want to do one more reminder about our payment plan since this will be the second 25% charge for many of you on an every other week schedule. If you're ever confused about charges, just let us know and we'll be able to either explain on the spot or figure it out after checking in your profile....

Most of you are on the default payment plan for your CSA Share (unless you opted to pay all at once). The payment plan a-goes like-a-this: When you signed up, you were charged 25% of the total cost of the CSA share. At your first pick up, you'll be charged another 25%, and the remaining 50% will be spread across all of the pick ups in the season. So you'll see a larger charge this week because it's charging for that 25%. Hope that's clearer than mud, the payment plan is something we get a lot of questions on (so if you asked one, you're not alone!). It is a little confusing, but it offers us the chance to get some upfront payments (to buy seed!) and offers our members the option to not pay too much up front.
