What a strange week we've had! On Monday, we were quite surprised to arrive at the farm at 34-35 degrees. There pockets of frost, and we even found some ice in the lettuces, but we seem to have pulled through with no major losses. Well, that's not entirely true, the major losses can be tallied up by this week's lost zucchini harvest. We had anticipated a huge yield from our newly producing summer squash block, but as the temperatures cooled, the zucchini plants decided to go on strike. So while we did manage to harvest enough zucchini to make sure you all get the value that you should in your boxes, it wasn't as much as we expected. So we'll likely have less/none at market, and we do tend 'juice' up the CSA shares when we have plenty of a certain item, but there likely won't be any juicing in the zucchini department! Not to worry though, we expect production to ramp back up as the temps climb back to what's more normal for this time of year. Even today was still uncharacteristically cool, and we all spent the day in our sweatshirts!
Happy Summer Solstice - today is the longest day of the year, or at least the lightest day anyway! We hope you all have an excellent day and enjoy the sunshine that has decided to finally show itself for a while before setting. See you at pick up this week!
Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy
