The rain is pouring down as I type - what a weird sound in August! We're happy for the moisture, but it is at a slightly worrying time. One crop that doesn't really like rain is melons as their nearing ripeness. They have a tendency to crack under the extreme pressure on the inside as a result of the erratic watering they get. So we've preemptively shut off their irrigation, and are crossing our fingers that we won't have too much damage from the rain. BUT, this is the week that our melons are just beginning to ripen, so already we would have a hard time estimating our yield for the week ahead, but with the rain, we're being extra conservative with our estimate for your Harvie boxes this week. Remember, that if melons are sold out in the system and we're able to harvest more next week than we've estimated, then just grab one while you're picking up - we'll definitely bring any extras to the market! All in all, the rain is excellent and it will bring far more good to our crops than bad!
It's time to get into your profile and customize (if you wish) your box for next week. In addition to the vegetables in our harvest estimate this week, we've got lots of great add-ons from other local producers. Speaking of add-ons, we have some excellent local producers with great products to add or swap into your boxes. This week, we have: - Artisan sourdough bread by Rachel at Pine Cabin Co. - Farm Fresh eggs from the Miller Farm - Pork from Double N Farms - ground pork, breakfast sausage and hot Italian sausage! - Fresh pressed apple cider and apple butter from Farm to Market Store - Honey from McLaury Apiaries - Dahlia bunches from our flower patch as it produces beautiful blooms this summer! Have a great weekend, and as always, let us know if you have any questions about our farm or the nuts and bolts of using Harvie. Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy Pic above: The largest group of garlic cleaners we've ever had at one time. We'll have lots of garlic available this week (larger heads as well as 1lb. increments). Our porcelain and german red garlic is great for eating and planting. |
