Hello Members!
Happy Fall! This change in season brings a big sigh of relief to all of us on the farm as we look forward to cooler days and chilly nights. Just as the tilt of the Earth in relation to the Sun has shifted, so have the crops in our gardens and grasses in our pastures. The cooler weather has welcomed the first four of our Fall calves and we are waiting on ten more.
The most exciting part of this Fall is Caney Fork Farm’s first chestnut harvest!!! These delectable delights have been falling to the ground for a few weeks now. Special care is taken to collect and remove the nuts from their spiky hulls before dunking them in a warm bath to keep any chestnut weevil from munching away on our organically grown Chestnuts. Chestnuts were once a staple food in the South before the blight came along in 1904, and we are ready to bring them back to your table like its 1903! Chestnuts can be made into flour for baked goods or roasted as a holiday treat or just an everyday treat since they are a fantastic source of protein. Check out these great recipes! 1lb and 5lb options are available in the extras section.
This months’ meat share was designed to be an “end of summer” grilling share so you can fire up the grill one last time and enjoy these warm days while they last! Don’t forget to refer your friends to our CSA to get a $25 credit to your account! We are now offering a “Mini Share” that is 6-7 lbs for $65 for those who are eating for one or just have a modest meat consuming family. And don’t forget about your furrier family members! We now sell dehydrated pig ears for dogs in our extras. These collagen-rich snacks will make their coats shine and their tails wag.
Lastly, mark your calendars for October 19th for our annual Lamb Roast! You, your family, and your friends are all invited to join. This event is a family friendly way to bring community together over something we all love – food. More information about the event will be sent in a separate email. Until then, enjoy your share!
Regeneratively yours,
Melissa and Gaabi
