CSA Week #16-B

Posted on August 27th, 2021 by Bonnie and Rudy Geber

Potatoes and onions are out of the ground, and more cover crop seed is in. Things are happening how they're supposed to, and we're going to do what we can to continue the trend! This week marked our last outdoor transplanting, and probably our last outdoor direct seeding for crops that are meant to grow to maturity and be harvested (i.e. still garlic and cover crops to seed). This week was also our last seeding of flats to grow out in our nursery and then transplant - we have another exception there because we'll continue to seed microgreens as long as they'll continue growing for us which is typically into October.

You'll notice that we are still very short on our Salad Mix - we'll likely continue to be through the last couple of weeks of the CSA. We're still harvesting close to 100 lbs of salad mix each week, but that is down considerably from earlier in the summer. The extreme heat that we saw for a few weeks was really rough on our salad transplants and that's coupling with some intense pest pressure and resulting in quite a bit less salad mix than we had planned for right now. We've opted to try to maintain our wholesale accounts for salad mix because it's our main wholesale crop, and we have SO MUCH other crops to offer right now at market and to you guys through our CSA boxes. We do hope to be back on the salad train again for the end of the season, but for now it's slim pickings on the salad front -- sorry about that, trust us, we hate it as much as you do!

Look forward to seeing you all at your chosen pick up locations this week!

Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy
