Here's a view of Ireland...well, that's what we call our new 'East Field' anyway. This year all of the space besides inside the tunnel was planted with potatoes and onions, and Ireland just seemed like an appropriate name. So of course, to distinguish this tunnel from our other similar one, it's become 'Dublin'. The outside crops are loving all of this rain and it's been amazing to watch just a week's worth of growth. We're doing our best to keep up with the likewise especially fast weed growth as well. This pic of Ireland highlights how we've done that... We were especially concerned about weeds in this plot because it's brand new and was newly disturbed this Spring - bringing a lot of weed seeds to the surface. So we've been really diligent to make sure we cultivate the pathways and areas around crops once a week. It's starting to pay off as this week, the job was noticeably easier. Since the top layer has been weeded so many times, we're starting to exhaust the new seeds that can sprout...until some new ones blow in of course! A farmers job of weeding is never done.
It's time to customize your shares for next week's pick up. Be sure to jump over to your profile before the Monday at noon cut off time if you'd like to do that. Why is the cutoff so early? Well, we use the 'pick list' that's generated right after the cutoff time to harvest for your boxes. It's actually quite important because we use it to check ourselves to be sure that all of the items go into boxes that were supposed to. Of course, we can still make mistakes, but having this early and accurate pick list is the best tool we have to manage all of the varied boxes that we build each week. Please do let us know if you notice an error in your box - it'll have been unintentional, but we'd still like to do all we can to make it right!
While you're tinkering with your box, don't forget to check out the items available from other producers and our own non-produce items. This week, we’ve got:
- Farm Fresh eggs from the Miller Farm
- Bread and Bagels from The Gracious Table
- Honey from McLaury Apiaries
- Plant Starts from our own farm: a couple last Cherry Tomato 6-packs (a mix of Super Sweet 100, Sungold, and Black Cherry tomatoes) and King Arthur bell peppers (they're great green, but if you let them ripen they'll be red).
- Our fabulous new Hoot Owl Farm tee-shirts. If you choose to get a shirt, then you can let us know what color and size you'd like at your pick up. We have cream and green available in adult sizes S-3XL, and yellow available in kids S-L
