This past week was a stressful one on the farm! The surprise frost warning did it's job and warned us with (just barely) enough time to protect our sensitive crops. And though we were cursing it at the time, we are very grateful for the warning because it turned out that we did get significant frost both nights. We hope that your gardens came out if it ok. We have some plants that are definitely feeling the pain of being frosted, but for the most part, it looks like we're mostly ok. Putting out covers at our scale is a big job and it's made much more difficult with any wind...which we had, lol. Besides the frost, the week has gone well though. We've made a lot of progress getting through our biweekly 'cultivation rotation' - this is a practice we're trying to make a habit of this year which involves a weeding through every part of the farm at least once every other week. Will we be able to follow through perfectly? Absolutely not, but it's helping us be intentional about which areas we focus on and so far had ensured that we don't totally overlook a block and lose it to a jungle of weeds. It's time to get into your profile and customize (if you wish) your box for next week. In addition to the vegetables in our harvest estimate this week, we've got lots of great add-ons from other local producers. Speaking of add-ons, we have some excellent local producers with great products to add or swap into your boxes. This week, we have: - Farm Fresh eggs from the Miller Farm - Fresh baked garlic parmesan bread from Dorio's - Pork from Double N Farms - ground pork, breakfast sausage, hot Italian sausage, bacon and pork chops! - Fresh pressed apple cider and apple butter from Farm to Market Store - Honey from McLaury Apiaries - Plant Starts from our own farm - Our fabulous Hoot Owl Farm tee-shirts. If you choose to get a shirt, then you can let us know what color and size you'd like at your pick up. We have cream, green and yellow available in adult sizes S-3XL. We anticipate a lot of crop growth next week as we're supposed to finally start to see warmer temperatures and maybe even some moisture, so stay tuned for much more vegetable varieties. See you all soon, and let us know if you have any questions! Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy Photo above is of a brassica block mid-weeding session. Our brassicas live their entire lives under insect netting, so it's not often that we get to see them in detail. Though they are later than year's past, they are looking great and some of you will see broccoli or Napa cabbage in your box this week which is a sure sign that Spring-brassica season is underway.
