Hard to believe it's week #7 of the CSA season already. We haven't really felt the oppressive heat of summer much yet, and we're a little unsure of what to expect from some of our heat-loving crops. It's been hard to estimate the growth of things like tomatoes, basil and summer squash because they just haven't been behaving quite like we've seen for the past several years with a fairly consistent ramp of of heat into July. It does appear that that while the weather has been off, you can't fight the seasonal change and we are seeing growth steadily improving. So practice patience, the abundant summer crops of tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini are coming soon.
Today has been a prep day. We've found that it's best to do a lot of one type of task at a time rather than switching gears too much. For example, we could tear out an old crop, add amendments, install irrigation, and plant a new crop a couple of times today...OR we could prep, prep, prep all day long, and hopefully plant A LOT of crops on Monday. That's what we're going for, and have places more or less ready for plantings of beets, lettuces, basil, and our first round of Fall brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbages).
We're looking forward to the weekend and are sure you are to! Enjoy it and remember...
It's time to get into your profile and customize (if you wish) your box for next week. In addition to the vegetables in our harvest estimate this week, we've got lots of great add-ons from other local producers.
Speaking of add-ons, we have some excellent local producers with great products to add or swap into your boxes. This week, we have:
- Farm Fresh eggs from the Miller Farm
- Pork from Double N Farms - ground pork, breakfast sausage, hot Italian sausage, bacon and pork chops!
- Fresh pressed apple cider and apple butter from Farm to Market Store
- Honey from McLaury Apiaries
Have a great weekend, and as always, let us know if you have any questions about our farm or the nuts and bolts of using Harvie.
Cheers, Bonnie & Rudy
