Farm Stand Week #19

Posted on September 20th, 2024 by Bonnie and Rudy Geber

Hello there! We're officially outside of the main CSA season, but we've still got LOTS of great produce available. So if you'd like to grab a customizable box for next week, now's the time to do it. Ordering will be open until Monday at noon.

It's looking like some beautiful Fall weather ahead for the next week, but the threat of frost is there for the next couple of nights so we'll see what happens. Most of our crops in the field now will be fine regardless of a frost, but we do have a sensitive few that are on the chopping block for our first really cold night (dahlias, green beans, field peppers, etc). Historically, we have a few close calls before those crops actually succumb, but we're not going to bank on that happening every season. Just today, we finished the last of our lettuce planting under cover, and soon we'll seed the last direct seeded beds under cover as well. We've found that any planting beyond this point is usually an exercise in futility because the plants never reach a harvestable size before winter and unless they're spinach, they rarely survive to produce a marketable crop in the spring either. So instead we're shifting our focus to harvesting the last of our fall crops (winter squash, potatoes, fall storage roots) and prepping for the next growing season.

Pic above: Rudy with some of our Megaton cabbages. Yes, we do have great cabbages for processing (sauerkraut) and storage deep into the winter (Wintertime Salads). We have a smaller version available now in the boxes (they won't fit!), but these Megatons will be available at the farm Oct. 3rd.

Reach out with any questions!

Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie

PS. Don't forget to MARK YOUR CALANDERS -- for October 3rd! We'll be having our Stock Up Sale and Pumpkin-Palooza out at the farm from 12-6 (yes, the hours have expanded!). The main intent here is threefold... 1) to get folks out to visit the farm and see where and how we operate, 2) to sell some produce because the market will have just ended and we're sure to have lots of produce still! A main focus of this produce will be 'keeper' crops that you can load up on and eat throughout the Fall and Winter (hence 'stock up'), and 3) to break into the pumpkin patch - we've barely scratched the surface of our pumpkins and want to offer the opportunity to folks to come out and pick their own pumpkin out of the field (and carry it themselves, of course, lol!), and a bonus 4) to have a good time visiting with our CSA members, customers and friends, we hope it will be a nice day with plenty of good cheer.
