First of all, we have no idea why our greenhouse photo appears upside down after many corrective attempts. So if it appears so in browser we will just have to ask you to turn your screen upside down and chalk it up to 2020:)
Summer has turned to that dry hot time of year where the sun seems to suck the moisture right out of the plants. It has sent us into overtime keeping things watered and happy. The dryness has its advantages and disadvantages. Our cherry tomato crop is busting with amazing flavor and doesn't seem to mind much. Bell peppers are loving it and are putting their energy into tasty fruits perfect for the pan. Seasoning peppers are also packed with flavor, although are coming smaller than usual. Our next watermelon crop is sweetening up nicely. Mangoes are falling without warning and new crops are stalling a bit in their early stages.
There is a forecast of rain this weekend, which may bring other complications. Invest 98L is moving our way and we hope to get the rain without much wind so our fruit crops stay in place for development in the coming weeks. There are many young crops that could really use the rain to make in time before the end of the season. Every week of the season brings its own set of challenges and blessings to respond to and celebrate. No matter what happens, we will do our best to keep it flowing.
We have a wide variety of organic crops to offer this week. One of them is something we don't get to offer often - the tiny yet notable miracle fruit. These are best shared -one per person- on what is called a flavor trip. Eaten correctly, it will change your taste buds to think anything sour or tart is insanely sweet for 2-3 hours. To eat, put in your mouth and break the skin with your teeth and then suck on the seed. Use your tongue to rub it around your mouth for 60 seconds. Then discard (and later plant) the seed. The next time you try anything sour like lime or genips you will get an amazing sweet flavor. I recommend adding some sour fruit to water and it will taste like something akin to lemonade. Watch this video for some more pointers and uses.
After a very long wait, we have been able to take in pigs to the St. Croix abattoir, which just reopened. So, this week end will have some cuts available at our Farm Tienda with pre-orders only. So please contact us if you want to add pork to your weekly take at the market. There will also be pork and veggie tamales, and other treats from Misfit Island Munchies, along with many more crop selections:)
Thanks for your support in our efforts to provide organic crops to you this week:) Stay safe enjoy all this season has to offer.
Nate & the Farm Crew.
