Two Sisters

Posted on August 22nd, 2019 by Nate Olive

Dear CSA members,

We are excited this week to feature cucumbers for the first time this season.  It makes a great companion crop for corn, as its leaves fan out and block weeds and it absorbs different nutrients from the soil profile.  The picture this week is in one of our living terraces, and we hope that the corn fills out as well as the cucumbers are. The corn plants are small so we might get some small ears, but we should see soon what happens. Cucumbers are great for cooling off in the end days of Summer.

Other seasonal transitions are happening as the days slowly shorten and some crops like eggplants and wax apples have made their exit.  The mangoes are starting to slow down and avocados are starting to peak.  The best part about the changing of the seasons are the different foods to enjoy from the island.

Please enjoy your week's farm share and remember our On-Farm Slow Down Dinner this Saturday, August 24th.  If you'd like to join there is still space and we'd love to have our CSA members present:) Text 340-473-1557 to RSVP.

In good food,

Nate
