Farm Happenings for September 7, 2019

Posted on September 4th, 2019 by Nate Olive

First of all, we send our prayers and support to our island brothers and sisters in the Bahamas after the devastating hurricane impacts. We are truly fortunate to have  been spared in Dorian's path and are counting our blessings.

This is our second week of the Summer Farm Share extension and we are already planting for the winter season. It will likely start in late November or December in time for the holidays.  We will open up to more members, so please help us spread the word when we announce the dates in the coming weeks.  So far, we've had a better than expected season and have enjoyed the new Harvie web system that allows easy customization.  We will likely be drawing this season to a close next week or the week after and we want to thank everyone for supporting and cooking our locally grown organic produce.  Leatherback Brewing has been an amazing supporter by hosting our pick up, thank you:)

You know the saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch."  Well, I should have considered that nugget of wisdom with the building of anticipation for the corn. In that short time between last week and today, our neighborhood deer have made banana popsicles out of the ears and ruined the entire patch. And it was looking so good. It's a tough loss for our crew as we were excited to share it and we were banking on it for next week. We will try corn again next summer, with better fencing. They also did a number on the intertwined cucumber patch.  So, next week will have a much more limited amount of vegetables available, and bigger portions of fruits will be included than what has been seen throughout the season. Other providers are still going strong. A few other greens, lettuces, and radishes may enter the mix. Dare I say what else? No, I learned my lesson. We will see what happens:)

We invite you to attend our Slow Down Farm Dinner on Sept. 14th with farmer/chef Andrew Thaldorf & Co.  It should be a great end of the season gathering.  We may extend another night on the 15th as the first evening is already half-full. Email us at csa@ridge2reef.org for info and to RSVP.

In good food,

Nate & the Farm Crew
