We are excited this week to have received our annual Organic Certificate after a crazy year which led to our first ever virtual inspection! All of the crops we feature are USDA organic unless it is listed under a different farm name. Organic or not, we support all our fellow farmers as our mission is to increase the amount of locally-produced food available the in the Virgin Islands. We plan on incorporating more producers in the near future who use sustainable and humane practices -so remember to customize your share to your desire:)
This week we have a wide variety of USDA certified organic crops for you! Highlights of the Farm Share include more colorful carrots, greenhouse cucumbers, ripening tomatoes off the vine, a return of mustard greens, lettuce, and bock choy, more beans than we expected, and a color show of seasoning peppers including local Seasoning and Dominican varieties.
We also are introducing two culinary creations available from farm apprentice Jenny, including ready-to-eat jars of tasty Carrot-Top Pesto and a Chaya Saag. Add them to your dishes and/or grab a container of goat cheese and smear them together on toasted crostini's for some supreme flavors in your weekly meals.
Moringa leaf bunches are another option for the week, which are packed FULL of proteins and many vitamins as one of most nutritional plants on the planet. Toss them in your stir fry, add to soups and smoothies for an energetic kick to your day.
Green papayas are also back in the game, which can be diced and cooked down with any seasoning you desire as they soak up any flavoring you add. Papayas are one of the best digestive and immune supporting crops you can eat, and they hold heat amazingly well after cooking down for 30 minutes. Try cooking them down with herbs, coconut milk, and curry spice for a down-island favorite!
Please stop by our Farm Tienda on Wednesdays and Saturdays for many crop extras not included here and special treats from Misfit Island Munchies!
In good food,
Nate & the Farm Crew
