Can't have flowers without any rain

Posted on August 10th, 2021 by Elizabeth Gallo

We hope everyone is staying dry today, although personally I'm getting a little impatient over here waiting for this storm to begin, we've haven't even gotten half an inch of rain yet! In order to prevent damages to some of our crops during the storm we've been busy harvesting certain crops all morning. That means this week we have a lot of pumpkins available as well as the first flush of watermelon. Another new item we have avaliable this week is yellow onions! We were able to successfully grow "real" onions which is very exciting since they normally don't do too well in this climate. Now these won't be like those fancy storage onions you get from the store that you can keep in your pantry, they're not cured in the same way so they'll have to live in the fridge. However, they are much bigger than green onions, more onion-y if you will, and the flavor is fantastic.

We will have more corn this week, as well as genips, greens, starfruit and other fun goodies. The mangoes are definitely starting to slow down a bit so make sure to get your fix in the next few weeks! Another new thing we'll be trying out this week is fresh cut flower bunches. We've been growing zinnias for a while now, mostly for our Slow Down Dinner arrangements and general merriment, however this week I think it's time for them to reach a wider audience. These bunches will be pre-made and labelled with your name, if you chose to order them, and available at either Leatherback or Little LaGrange. I'm thinking I'll keep them with Brian at the bar so when you meet him to get your box he'll also give you your flower arrangement and same deal for Little LaGrange folks. I've been dreaming about flower bunches for a while now so I'm pumped to finally have the supply to make them happen. I could go on and on about flowers if I let myself, but I won't because there's beds to prep and tomatoes to seed before we get hit by any nastiness.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!
