You guys remember all that rain last week? We're already feeling the effects of that, both positively and negatively. Lots of rain means lots of green. New growth on trees, new growth on crop plants, and new weeds. We planted a lot last week which worked out well with the amount of rain we got, but that also means we will need to work extra hard to make sure we protect those new plants from weed pressure. We spent a lot of time weeding and pruning cherry tomatoes today to ensure their success. They are just now starting to flower so hopefully we'll be getting some harvesting done in a few weeks!
Last week we welcomed two new interns, Star from Colorado and Chris from New York, so if you see them around make sure to give them a warm welcome. They will be replacing two apprentices that are leaving at the end of the month who plan to go back to the States to work on farms for the summer season. We love getting new help and teaching new people about the joys and frustrations of farming in the subtropics. One of my favorite things is watching the journeys people go on after working with us and seeing the cool projects they get into.
This past weekend we had another successful Slow Down Dinner and Snowbear led a small bush skills workshop teaching people how to make bamboo fishing spears and fruit pickers. We love that we are able to host events on the farm once again and we hope that you all will come join us for Slow Down Dinners and other things in the future! We hope everyone has a pleasant weekend and a lovely St. Patrick's Day :) Have fun out there...and don't forget to eat your greens!
