Nate and I have been spending a lot of time recently reflecting on things that bring us joy and things that we are looking forward to in the remaining weeks of the season. We look forward to the arrival of new interns and apprentices in a few weeks, the first harvest of many new crops, and the continual harvest of fruits such as mango and avocado from our orchards, to name a few. This image above is from our onion plot, which is one crop that we grow that brings me a lot of joy. Last week I talked about our canary melon crop and how excited we all are that it was such a success. Onions are kind of the same deal and it always feels great to be successful in the face of a challenge, i.e. growing things here successfully that sometimes seem like they just want to fail.
This week the crew will be busy weeding and mulching, action and reaction, working with the rain. Rain, as I'm sure everyone is well aware, causes the weed seed in our fields to go nuts, resulting in tall grass everywhere, lots of unpleasant vines and other plants that try to crowd out our crops and limit their ability to grow. Reacting against the rain means spending long hours in the fields weeding to ensure that our crops still have plenty of room to grow. Mulching using the grass we cut helps prevent some weeds from germinating by blocking out the sun in certain areas of our gardens and fields. Spreading mulch is a great practice and we are lucky enough to be able to support our mulch needs with the terribly large amount of grass on our property. Did I say terrible? I meant wonderful...
Anyways we hope everyone has a great week, even if it is a bit dry and hazy, and we look forward to seeing you all this weekend!
