Farming in the rainforest can be quite rewarding but it is not without it's fair share of challenges as well. One great thing about where we are located on the island is things grow fast - like really really fast. If you transplant a tomato plant, sometimes in as little as two weeks they begin flowering...which is insane. This also means that weeds grow even faster. Sometimes it can be difficult to direct seed things like greens or carrots because the weeds grow so much faster than the crops and often out compete them if not addressed quickly enough. We love the almost instant gratification of planting a whole field, like the one pictured above, and seeing it bear produce within a few weeks, even if that means we need to weed it several times a week...
This week we have loads of greens that are loving this rainy weather as well as an enormous amount of zucchini. The starfruit are ripening fast so we will have more of that available as well. The mangoes are taking their sweet sweet time but I think in a few weeks we might have a semblance of a proper mango season. It would be wild if we started getting avocados in before our first big mango harvest but it almost seems like that may be the case, which I would not hate.
We hope everyone has an excellent week and we look forward to seeing you this weekend. Make sure to stop by Farm Tienda for the veggies that didn't make the cut in the shares and some delicious Misfit Island Munchies prepared foods.
