The season is now truly turning for the dryness we expect for this time of year. The growth rate of plants has slowed and some look downright shocked, while others are enjoying a break from the flooded fields of a month ago. We are hoping it will help stem the proliferation of pests and plant pathogens that have taken away our cucumbers and kale a bit earlier than expected. Many of these battles on our end are fought in the latest hours of the day and into the night when we get the most out of our watering and organic pest control efforts.
We are really excited this week to be introducing outstandingly fresh turmeric! The turn to the dry has let them drop their leaves and sink their energy into their delicious edible and medicinal roots as they are primed for optimal harvesting and use in your kitchen. Not only do they offer amazing flavor in many dishes, they can also be eaten raw to build up your teeth enamel (you might want to brush afterwards to remove the yellow coloring) and are renowned for reducing inflammation and arthritis. Perhaps you will want to try out this recipe for golden milk. There will be more in the weeks to follow, as we have a lot to share!
This weekend we will be have a booth at VI Agrifest, so please stop by and say hello. You will be able to pick up some extra tomatoes, turmeric, and we also will have selected plants for sale out of our nursery. Unfortunately we won't be able to carry farm shares because we lack a way to keep them cool and the farmer building can get hot.
In partnership with a core group of initial farms, we will also be hosting our first membership drive for the Virgin Islands Farmers Alliance (VIFA). The purpose of the organization is to improve farming and the local food supply in the VI and membership is open to all. You don't have to be a farmer to join VIFA and enjoy the upcoming events and opportunities we aim to bring through our mutual efforts. Four different membership levels include 1) Licensed VI Farmers (voting members), Farm Families, Rising Farmers (new and youth), and Farm Friends (all who have an interest in farming). It's only $10 per year to be a member, which goes towards improving the local food scene the VI:)
Finally, please note that the farm share customization period will end a bit earlier than prior weeks, at 8pm thursday. If you haven't customized yet, give it a shot to get all your favorites out of our weekly offerings.
blessings in your kitchen,
Nate & the Farm Crew
