Spring Update from Farmer John

Posted on May 26th, 2024 by Pam Dysinger

Dear CSA Family,

Happy Spring to you! I just wanted to give a short update on the state of the farm from the farmer’s point of view: Overall, it has been a very uneventful Spring — which is the best kind for farmers; No major disasters or crop failures! The weather has been good — although a little more rain than we would choose. We are very thankful for all our covered growing areas (we put up 2 more caterpillar tunnels a few weeks back to cover more strawberries). These areas serve 2 main purposes: First is winter cold protection, but the second — which is just as important — is rain protection. They allow us to plant, trellis, cultivate and harvest according to our preferred schedule, rather than working around the weather. Maybe you can begin to understand why most farmers want “Just one more tunnel….”! With the warming weather, the spring crops are beginning to fade, but the summer ones are coming on strong. We are now picking our first slicing tomatoes and peppers will not be far behind! Okra and green beans will be here before you know it, but we remain committed to having lettuce year round — which is not an easy feat during the heat of summer! We always appreciate your feedback on what we grow. Over the last few years we have definitely cut back on the variety of crops we tend — focusing more on the perennial favorites — rather than convincing people to try something new and unusual. But, please speak up if there is something you would like us to grow that we are not! We are here to serve you, and that means trying to keep you happy with the quality, quantity and variety. Thank you once again for your loyalty and support. We need each other!

Bountiful Blessings to you!  John
