How is this cold, wet weather affecting our crops? We get this question a lot! Here's the answer.
Our field (outside) crops are noticeably slower growing than the previous three years that we've grown here, but since most of them are greens, their quality is superb since greens like cooler temps and lots of water! About 1/4 of our total growing space is covered by high tunnels (we have about a total of 40,000 square feet or 1 acre and 10,000 square feet in high tunnels - with one more on the way!), so the crops in them are sailing right through the cooler weather without showing signs of slowing. This is why we invest in so much protected space; because the weather is so unpredictable, we can control a lot more in the indoor growing space. If we were trying to grow our peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers outside, we'd still be waiting a few weeks for the first fruits!
It seems like summer is slowly creeping in, and we'll have beautiful weather coming up. This is good for rapid crop growth and also farmer morale!
Enjoy your produce this week. Bell peppers make their first appearance!
