The Transition Begins

WE STILL NEED YOUR CROP BOXES!  Please set a reminder for yourself to return them to us when you pick up your produce.  Thank you!

It may seem like the height of summer, but as farmers we're always thinking two seasons ahead!  That means our crops for winter need to get in the ground, which makes for a busy time of year for us.  The picture above shows our mechanical "paper pot" transplanter at the end of a long day, after we'd transplanted half of our November spring mix into an unheated high tunnel.  To get all that lettuce in (which we "row crop", or, plant into blocks without pathways), we had to make the tough decision to pull out productive plants like kale, cilantro and spinach.  Hard as it is in the moment, we're always glad to have productive plants in the dead of winter, and it always pays off to get them in on time!

Most of our high tunnels are now in transition: half filled with productive summer crops like tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and basil, and half filled with fall and winter crops like lettuce, chard, kale and parsley, sometimes intermixed with each other to make them all fit!  It really takes some complicated choreography to run a year-round farm, but we get better at it every year.

Enjoy the produce this week.  Broccolini is back!
