The Story of Moose Meadow Farm (in brief format!)

Posted on October 4th, 2020 by Katherine Nietmann

THIS IS THE SECOND-TO-LAST CSA PICK UP!  Some of you have been with us since our inception in 2016, but many of you are brand new 2020 customers!  We thought we'd take one of our last newsletters to fill you all in on our origin story, in brief (we value your time!).

This photo is of owners Katherine and Spencer on what is now our farm in 2015 amidst extremely smokey skies.

  • May 2016 K and S move to Clark Fork from Maine, having just ridden our bikes across the country on an epic 3 month adventure!  We build our cabin, plow two fields, and build two greenhouses.
  • October 2016 we start selling produce from our two greenhouses (we always knew we were going to be a year-round farm)
  • Summer 2017 we attend the Farmers' Market at Sandpoint, and run a 30-member CSA.  We re-build a bigger version of a small greenhouse that collapsed.  We sell fresh produce all winter through our online store.
  • 2018 no more farmers' market; instead we run a 60 member CSA and start selling lettuce, tomatoes and microgreens wholesale (which means grocery stores in our case).  We build a third greenhouse and start heating one of them in the winter.  We sell fresh and storage produce all winter through our online store.
  • 2019 we run a 75 member CSA, expand our wholesale accounts (a few more grocery stores, now taking us to Spokane), and begin heating another greenhouse (for a total of two heated).  We hire our delivery driver, Scott.  We sell fresh and storage produce through our online store all winter.
  • 2020 we run a 80 member CSA, add a few crops to our wholesale list (spinach, sunflower shoots and arugula microgreens), and build another greenhouse (for a total of 4).  We also get married and start a family!  We hire our full-time farm hand, Michelle.  We get a ton done thanks to Michelle!

It's been a wild ride and we're so thankful for you all to be on it with us.  Whether you stay with us for decades more or move on, you have touched our lives and helped make our farming dreams a reality.

Extras of most crops are available this week.  Feel free to stock up!  Enjoy the produce,

Katherine and Spencer
