Welcome to Week 16! There are three weeks left in the summer CSA including this week.
Our baby June transitioned to crawling this week, and it seems apt timing as we are transitioning to a new season as well. As farmers, we think of the four seasons a little differently than what the calendars tell us. Farmer Spring is March, April and May. Farmer Summer is June, July and August. Farmer Fall is September, October and November. Farmer Winter is December, January and February. Therefore we've just entered Farmer Fall and the weather outside is confirming it!
Though we're still waiting for the first hard frost to sweeten up our root vegetables (like carrots and beets; the frost converts their starch to sugar as a preservative which makes them taste sweet to us eaters!), our fall greens are in their element and our summer fruits will only be here for a few more weeks. You will still see tomatoes, bell and snacking peppers, cucumbers and eggplant in your boxes for the rest of the CSA, even if we do get that hard frost, thanks to protective high tunnels. Meanwhile, we're filling up our tunnels around them with fall and winter crops like kale, spinach, lettuce, radishes, chard and herbs. Just this week, Katherine transplanted 3,840 row feet of spinach!
We hope you make the most of the last few weeks of the CSA. Enjoy the cool weather and some roasted vegetables too!
