Have You Grown A...

Posted on April 18th, 2021 by Pam Dysinger

Have you ever grown tomatoes,  peppers, basil,  or maybe eggplant?  If not I want to share with you some reasons I think everyone should be involved in gardening even if it is a tiny garden (especially if you have children).

  1. you will learn that it’s a lot of work to put real food on the table.
  2. Patience is required to wait for the fruit to ripen.
  3. You will learn that each plant needs different conditions to thrive (sort of like people).
  4. In order to care for the plant you will have to get outside and enjoy some sunshine (the best form of vitamin D).  You may even sweat - great detoxing and cleansing the body of impurities.  Oh, and we can’t forget the invigorating fresh air - be sure to do some deep breathing.
  5. You and your family will relish eating any food that you have grown.

So, along with your vegetable share for this week take a look at the plants we have for sale and see for yourself if growing your own little garden (even if it is just one plant in your flower bed) doesn’t bring you a great learning experience.

You will notice in some of the pictures that our 2-3” plants are just in soil. This is the soil blocking system which we still believe produces the best transplants. Why? the roots grow to the edge of the block and stop (called air pruning).  This means our plants are never root bound and experience much less stress when set in your garden - those roots are just waiting to grow as soon as they get into the soil. Plus these have a lot more soil for transplants of this size which makes a healthier root ball.  The 6” pots are for those who want to get a jump start, lots of soil and much bigger plants ($4.50 may seem like a lot but just think of the fact that 2-3 organic tomatoes would cost you more than that).
