Dear CSA Family,
We were reminded recently of the incredible importance of little things — in fact, things as small as a dot. You see, we are amending all our growing areas with minerals and micronutrients; Boron is incredibly important for plant growth, but in very small amounts! Too much of a good thing (like Boron) can be toxic. Well, one of our interns was amending a pad and overlooked a decimal point. Instead of 0.7 pounds, he put on 7 pounds! I take full blame for not having better oversight, but when the mistake was discovered, I immediately called our soil consultant. “We’ve got a big problem,” I blurted out, “We just put on 10 times too much Boron!.” Well, after talking through the situation a little more, he said, “The bad news is that everything growing in that area will probably die (it was about 6000 sq. ft. of growing area — lettuce and flowers — some of our most valuable crops!). The good news is that there should be no long-term negative effects on the soil.”
Immediately we starting praying for mercy and did everything we could (Kelli transplanted a lot of her most valuable flowers to another pad, we flushed the soil with copious amounts of water, and the Lord added His part by sending lots of rain). The outcome: everything is still thriving! We praise God for his mercy and are recommitted to not overlooking the little things in life — because that’s largely what life is made of.
